Ok, I got it
Lightweights
I never really rated the lightweight figure when it came out. It was clearly an improvement on the Zombie figure but always felt just 'too lightweight' to me. I didn't even like the hollow sound they made when hitting the ball. What also annoyed me was that all the inner discs seemed to be white, making even the most different kits near hard to distinguish in the heat of a game.

Despite my reservations I do have a number of lightweights which can be seen here.

*Coming Soon - Watch out for the Vintage Years kits that I am repainting onto spare figures.
Like the zombie before them, the lightweight figure came with a peg fitting. This did not change from its introduction in 1980 until Subbuteo production ceased.

New figures such as Soccer 3D and the excellent 2K4 figures from Stefan Corda all use the same standard peg fitting.
Ref 333 - Aston Villa
Ref 353 - Tranmere Rovers 1981-82

Famous on Merseyside for being John Boston's favourite team!
Ref 387 - Bristol Rovers
Ref 398 - Sampdoria

During a glorious stint in the late 80s, early 90s my friend Fraser had a Subbuteo set bought for him by his girlfriend. After a conversation when he confessed all - I then confessed all and whipped out my box of teams. Needless to say he was very impressed. A European Super League ensued. I remember he was ever enthusiastic at our weekly meetings as I routinely thrashed him, I don't think I would have come back for more so readily.
Curiously one of my teams was Rangers and they managed not to win a single game during the whole campaign.
Sampdoria was Fraser's favourite Italian team. He wore a replica shirt when we played football on Saturdays. It was then his turn to routinely thrash me whilst I tried my best to kick him.
I bought this team for Fraser but he never paid me for it and so I ended up keeping it.
Ref 500 - Queens Park Rangers 1984-85

Not a bad example this - I like to think that quality control pulled out all the stops on this one, in order to impress Peter Adolph the games creator (he was a QPR fan). Yes I know he'd sold the company years before!
Ref 620 - Watford, Partick Thistle 1986-88
Ref 664 - Liverpool 2nd 1988-91

Probably the best team in the world - In a not very good kit.
Ref 719 - England (1993)

Note the massive badge and umbro logo. I dread to think what your nipple rub would be like if you actually wore a shirt like that!
742 - Liverpool 2nd - 1992-93

For a time Hasbro prefixed existing references with 63 before overhauling & re-numbering their product line.
63742 - Liverpool 2nd

Somewhat confusingly this is one of 3 Liverpool away kits on the same reference. Luckily I have them all so you can sleep easy.

I remember buying this team in Oldrids Department Store in Boston, Linconshire in 1996.
Ref 63742 - Liverpool 2nd
Ref 770 - Manchester United 1993-94 and 1995-96.
One or two of these are damaged so may well yet see themselves repainted into a decent side.
Ref 771 - Manchester United 2nd 1993-1996

Yawn - I see a repaint coming on.
Ref 790 - Bordeaux (France) 1993-95 and 1996.
Ref 792 - Manchester United 3rd Kit 1994-1996
Ref 815 - Newcastle United Away.

This team typifies the problem I have with the machine printed figures. A kit that would otherwise look very striking is washed out. It is almost impossible to pick out the detail.
Ref 63131 - Arsenal

This is a Hasbro team. They basically prefixed the original numbers with 63 - as well as drastically reducing the range of teams available.

On the plus side these came with a solid one piece base. An improvement, at least as far as I am concerned. Also note the 11th man, handy in case of breakages.

These little fellows have donated their base to my 2k4 project. So are currently out to pasture.
63135 - Liverpool 2nd

The ecru kit - though mine looks white to me!
63776 - Aston Villa 1996

I bought these on ebay purely and simply to reuse the solid hasbro bases, but I quite like them and think they may have earned a reprieve. I guess I have a thing for claret and blue.
