Despite the fact that my interest in Subbuteo started in the late 70s, I wasn't aware of this figure type until the 90s when I picked up a ref 7 team (pictured below) at Quiggins in Liverpool.
They have quite a curious pose, leaning over to their left with one arm thrown out to the side. I wasn't too sure that I liked them when I first saw them but now how grown to be quite a fan.
I don't have many of these early teams but one in particular is a real favourite, Ref 52 Exeter.
Santiago do a nice recasting of this figure type.
I acquired these as part of a small lot on ebay. Goodness knows who they are meant to be, they have clearly been overpainted a number of times. and obviously are in need of some love and attention.
Ref 7 - West Ham
Arsenal Ref 16 - This team was picked up off ebay for a couple of pounds. It has a few broken figures and has been overpainted to represent the Gunners.
Needless to say it's a bad job, long sleeves have been added and the red is gloss and badly applied.
I must admit I was guilty of the odd overpaint myself as a youngster. However it beggers belief why anyone would repaint a team to represent the same team they had before they started!
